Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the effectiveness of phytoremediation using the Paris Lily (Chlorophytum comosum) and Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) plants in reducing pollutant levels in the wastewater of the Laweyan Batik Village Communal Wastewater Treatment Plant. The study was conducted with variations in plant composition of 250:0, 200:100, 150:150, 100:200, and 0:250 grams in a waste volume of 5 liters. Observations were made for 10 days by testing the parameters of COD, TDS, pH, and color intensity on days 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10. The results showed that the phytoremediation process was able to reduce all pollutant parameters tested. The initial COD value of 942.0561 mg/L decreased with the highest efficiency of 86.67% in the composition of 150 g of Paris Lily and 150 g of Peace Lily. The initial TDS value of 5.341 g/L decreased to an efficiency of 93.30%. The pH parameter, which was initially alkaline, decreased to near neutral at the end of the observation. Furthermore, the color intensity of the wastewater measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer decreased in absorbance from 1.055 to 0.763981, with a color removal efficiency of 27.58%. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the combination of the Spider Lily (Chlorophytum comosum) and the Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) plants is effective as a phytoremediation agent to improve the quality of batik wastewater. The 150 g:150 g plant composition provided the best results in reducing pollutant levels, thus potentially being applied as a simple, economical, and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment method.
