Abstract

Stunting is a condition of impaired growth caused by chronic nutritional deficiencies that may affect children's physical growth, cognitive development, and long-term health. Maternal knowledge and attitudes, as well as child feeding practices, play an important role in meeting children's nutritional needs. This study aimed to determine the relationship between maternal knowledge, attitudes, and feeding patterns and the incidence of stunting among toddlers in the working area of Palabuhanratu Health Center, Sukabumi, in 2023. This quantitative correlational study used a cross-sectional design involving 66 mothers with toddlers selected through total sampling. Maternal knowledge and attitudes were assessed using questionnaires, while feeding patterns were assessed using a modified Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Stunting was determined based on height-for-age measurements. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that 29 mothers (43.9%) had moderate knowledge, 57 (86.4%) had negative attitudes, and 47 (71.2%) had inappropriate feeding patterns. Among the 66 toddlers, 41 (62.1%) were classified as short and 25 (37.9%) as severely short. Significant relationships were found between maternal knowledge (p = 0.009), attitudes (p = 0.001), feeding patterns (p = 0.019), and stunting. Strengthening nutrition education, positive maternal attitudes, and appropriate feeding practices is important for stunting prevention.
