Abstract

The Samboja-Sepaku main road, one of the access routes to the new capital city of Nusantara (IKN), experienced a landslide in December 2024 that cut off road access. This study aims to identify the geological conditions, landslide characteristics, and ground surface deformation in the study area, and to analyze the relationship between the landslide and geological conditions, deformation derived from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) processing, and Fault Fracture Density (FFD). Surface deformation was analyzed using the Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) InSAR method based on Sentinel-1 imagery from January 2024 to March 2026, while the density of geological structures was analyzed using the FFD method based on lineaments extracted from DEM data. The results show that the study area is composed of claystone, fine sandstone, and interbedded claystone–fine sandstone lithologies, forming a denudational landform of hills affected by moderate to severe erosion. The landslide is characterized as a translational slide involving a mixture of soil and rock material. SBAS-InSAR processing revealed subsidence-type deformation ranging from -20 to -60 mm/year at the landslide points, while FFD analysis showed lineament density dominated by high to moderate values. Zones of high deformation were associated with zones of high to moderate lineament density, indicating that fracture-related geological structures act as weak planes controlling the deformation process. The plastic, water-saturation-prone claystone lithology, combined with steep slope gradients, accelerated soil mass movement in zones with high structural density. Overall, the geological conditions and regional structures in the form of folds and faults are the main controlling factors of deformation and landslide occurrence in the study area.
