Abstract

Science learning requires learning experiences that allow students to connect scientific concepts with real environmental phenomena, yet classroom instruction may provide limited opportunities for direct observation and meaningful interaction with the learning environment. This condition highlights the need for learning approaches that utilize the surrounding environment to support students’ interest and learning outcomes. This study aimed to determine the effect of an environment-based Outdoor Learning model on students’ learning interest and science learning outcomes at SMP Darul Fallaah. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a Pretest–Posttest Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 64 students divided into an experimental class and a control class, with 32 students in each class. Data were collected through pretest–posttest tests, learning-interest questionnaires, observation sheets, and documentation. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using normality tests, homogeneity tests, Independent Samples t-test, and Normalized Gain (N-Gain) analysis. The results showed that the mean learning-interest score in the experimental class increased from 51.84 to 85.62, while the control class increased from 52.13 to 73.45. The mean science learning-outcome score in the experimental class increased from 49.76 to 86.14, whereas the control class increased from 50.21 to 74.36. The N-Gain analysis showed an increase in learning interest of 0.70 and science learning outcomes of 0.72 in the experimental class, both categorized as high, while the control class obtained N-Gain values of 0.47 and 0.50, respectively, categorized as moderate. The Independent Samples t-test yielded significance values of 0.001 for learning interest and 0.000 for science learning outcomes (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control classes. The findings indicate that the environment-based Outdoor Learning model was associated with higher learning interest and science learning outcomes among students at SMP Darul Fallaah.
