Abstract

The use of conventional abrasives (microbeads) in body scrub formulations poses potential ecological risks. As an eco-friendly alternative, this study aimed to formulate a body scrub cream using rice powder (Oryza sativa) as a natural abrasive and 3% ethanolic extract of jamblang leaves (Syzygium cumini) as an antioxidant, while evaluating the effect of varying ratios of Tween 80 and Span 80 emulsifiers on physical stability. This study employed a true experimental method. Jamblang leaf extraction was performed via maceration using 70% ethanol, yielding a thick extract with a 29.4% recovery rate. Three cream formulations were prepared with varying emulsifier ratios of Tween 80 to Span 80—FI (1:1), FII (2:1), and FIII (1:2)—and subsequently evaluated for physical quality, including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and adhesiveness. The results indicated that the emulsifier ratio significantly influenced the product's characteristics. FI and FII produced stable, light-brown creams with a characteristic aroma, whereas FIII resulted in a bluish-brown paste that underwent color changes. All three formulas were homogeneous, maintained a stable pH (6.3–6.5), and exhibited adhesiveness exceeding 4 seconds. Regarding spreadability, FI (5.35–5.75 cm) and FII (5.50–5.70 cm) met topical product standards, while FIII (3.75–4.45 cm) did not. It is concluded that Formula II (2:1 ratio) yielded the body scrub cream with the best physical quality.
