Abstract

This study aims to analyze the stylistics of metaphors derived from natural elements in the novel Lingkar Tanah Lingkar Air by Ahmad Tohari. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a stylistic approach. The research data are in the form of words, phrases, or sentences containing metaphors of natural elements in the novel. Data collection techniques are carried out through identification, categorization, and data analysis. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman model which includes data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions, and data verification. This study uses the theory of Lakoff and Johnson which divides metaphors into three types, namely ontological, orientational, and structural. The results show that there are 114 findings of natural element metaphors, consisting of 58 ontological metaphors, 33 orientational metaphors, and 23 structural metaphors. The dominance of ontological metaphors shows Ahmad Tohari’s tendency to describe inner experiences, ideological conflicts, and war conditions through natural elements such as fire, light, wind, forests, and darkness. Stylistically, Ahmad Tohari presents poetic, symbolic, and imaginative language through metaphors such as “seeds of hope”, “my dark hope”, and “burning emotions”. Thus, the metaphor of natural elements is a characteristic of Ahmad Tohari’s stylistics in describing the relationship between humans, nature, culture and spirituality in the novel.
