Abstract

Films become a means to represent women’s struggles in facing injustice and patriarchal culture. This study aims to analyze the representation of feminism in the film Andai Ibu Tidak Menikah dengan Ayah by Kuntz Agus. This study uses a qualitative method with a feminist approach. The analysis of feminism in the film is based on Kate Millett’s theory. The data source in this study is the film Andai Ibu Tidak Menikah dengan Ayah by Kuntz Agus. The research data include scenes, dialogues, and actions of characters in the film that represent power relations, gender inequality, and forms of patriarchal domination experienced by female characters. The data collection technique was observation and note-taking. Data analysis in the study goes through three stages: (1) classifying data in the form of scenes and dialogues that show power relations between men and women in the film, (2) interpreting forms of patriarchal domination based on Kate Millett’s feminist theory, and (3) drawing conclusions regarding the representation of gender inequality and resistance of female characters in the film. The validity of the research data was tested using triangulation of sources and theories to ensure the consistency and accuracy of the film analysis. The results of the study show that female characters in the film experience various injustices including a deeply rooted patriarchal culture, economic oppression, verbal violence, and coercion in determining life choices. In addition, the film also shows forms of resistance from female characters in defending the right to education, refusing to marry immediately, and the courage to reveal the injustice that has been experienced in the family.
