Abstract

This study examines the representation of Nusantara culture in the Sahabatku Indonesia textbooks for levels C1 and C2, published by the Center for Language Strategy and Diplomacy Development (PPSDK) in 2016. Using a qualitative-descriptive content analysis method, this study maps cultural categories, the geographical distribution of representations, and the depth of cultural content presentation in each learning unit. The analysis was conducted on 16 cultural topics spread across both parts of the book using an instrument based on Byram’s (2021) five-dimensional savoirs and Cortazzi and Jin’s (1999) cultural categories. The results indicate that cultural representation at the C1 level is dominated by the Savoirs dimension (average 2.8), while the Savoir comprendre and Savoir s’engager dimensions remain very low (1.2 each), suggesting that the book primarily presents cultural knowledge in a declarative manner rather than fostering critical reflection. The C2 level shows a more balanced profile with a total average of 9.7 out of 15. Geographically, 93.75% of the content falls under the source culture, while the regions of Eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, and Bali are not represented at all, reflecting a significant imbalance in regional representation. The implications of these findings for the development of BIPA learners’ intercultural competencies are discussed through Byram’s (2021) framework.
