Abstract

Women-led MSMEs in Indonesia often serve as an important pillar of household economic resilience, particularly during periods of economic uncertainty such as the COVID-19 pandemic, job loss, the death of a family member, or rising commodity prices. This study examines the family economic resilience strategies constructed by women MSME actors in Bandung City and its surrounding areas through the use of digital media, particularly WhatsApp and TikTok. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions involving nineteen women micro and ultra-micro entrepreneurs and three MSME facilitators. Data were analyzed thematically using social capital theory from Bourdieu, Coleman, and Putnam and family resilience theory from Walsh within the perspective of the sociology of family economy. The findings show that digital media functions as: (1) a pathway to post-crisis economic recovery, both personal (bereavement, illness, layoffs) and structural (pandemic, rising raw material prices); (2) a medium for building social capital through cross-MSME networks, information sharing on raw material prices, and relationships with government and facilitators; and (3) a space for negotiating women's dual roles between domestic responsibilities and productive activities. However, the digital literacy gap across generations, limited confidence in hiring labor, and the increasing cost burden of digital platforms remain structural barriers that constrain this resilience. The study recommends strengthening sustainable, peer-community-based digital mentoring to reinforce the family economic resilience of women MSME actors.
