Abstract

The physical environment plays a highly significant role in shaping human social behavior. Environmental psychology research has consistently demonstrated that factors such as personal space, density, noise, temperature, air pollution, and architectural design directly and indirectly influence how humans interact with one another in daily life. Various studies show that unsupportive environmental conditions can diminish the quality of social interactions, increase aggressiveness, and disrupt individual mental health. Conversely, a well-designed environment can promote social harmony, enhance productivity, and restore psychological well-being. This article employs a qualitative approach through the library research method to analyze the relationship between the physical environment and social behavior. The study draws on the work of David O. Sears, Jonathan L. Freedman, and L. Anne Peplau (1994) in their book Social Psychology, supported by theories such as Cognitive Load Theory (Moreno & Park, 2010), Self-Control Theory (Ghufron & Risnawita, 2010), and the Environmental Stress Model (Bell et al., 1996). The findings affirm the importance of an environmental psychology approach in designing humane and sustainable living and working spaces to improve the quality of social life in the modern era of urbanization.
