Abstract

Abstract  Introduction: Individual identification methods can involve dental examinations, which can be visualized through radiography. There is a method for estimating individual age using an atlas specifically developed for the Indonesian population, known as The Atlas of Dental Development in the Indonesian Population. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of estimating the age of individual between 6 and 12 years using the Atlas of Dental Development in the Indonesian Population method with panoramic radiographs in the Dental Hospital (RSKGM) of South Sumatra Province. Material and Methods: This research employed an observational analytical approach, utilizing a cross-sectional design involving 360 panoramic radiographs of patients aged between 6 and 12 years. The data was collected from January 2020 to June 2023 at RSKGM in South Sumatra Province. Dental age estimation was conducted based on panoramic radiographs, focusing on the developmental progress of teeth on one side. The statistical analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon test. Results: The results of the Wilcoxon test indicated that there were no significant differences between dental age and chronological age within the age range of 9-12 years (p-value>0.05). However, significant differences were observed in the age range of 6-8 years (p-value<0.05).  Conclusion: The Atlas of Dental Development in the Indonesian Population method can be employed for age estimation using panoramic radiographs at RSKGM of South Sumatra, and it is more effective for estimating ages within the 9-12 years range.
