Abstract

Artificial intelligence–based conversational systems are increasingly used as alternative spaces for emotional expression, yet their role as communication companions for late adolescents remains underexplored. This study aimed to identify patterns of perception toward an AI-Humortherapeutic intervention among late adolescents who experienced limited communication within family relationships. A qualitative descriptive design was used. Twelve participants aged 18–21 years who completed the intervention and provided complete post-intervention responses were included. Data were obtained from open-ended responses following four categorical questions and analyzed thematically. Five themes emerged: digital conversation as an alternative space for storytelling, conversation as a means of reflection and emotional validation, emotional responses that were not always positive, support with clear limits on the system’s role, and acceptance accompanied by considerations for further development. Participants perceived the system as helpful for expressing difficult thoughts, organizing problems, and receiving supportive responses, while still maintaining personal control over decisions and stress management. The findings position AI-Humortherapeutic as a situational communication support rather than a replacement for interpersonal relationships or professional services. Further development should consider contextual humor, user control, privacy, and safety in emotionally sensitive conversations.
