Abstract

Young adult women are in the sixth stage of social-psychological development, known as intimacy versus isolation. At this stage, individuals are expected to be able to build emotional closeness, meaningful relationships, and commitment with others. Many young adult women are in unhealthy romantic relationships, such as those involving excessive control, characterized by an imbalance of power between partners, which can ultimately lead to psychological abuse. This study aims to determine the effect of psychological abuse in romantic relationships on self-esteem among young adult women. This study employed a non-experimental quantitative approach. The study sample consisted of 125 young adult women. Data collection utilized the Self-Esteem Scale (α) = 0.846 and the Psychological Violence Experience in Dating Scale (α) = 0.984. The results of the simple linear regression test showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) with the equation Y = 12.794 - 0.257 X, thereby supporting the research hypothesis: Psychological Abuse in Dating accounts for 13.4% of the decrease in self-esteem. This means that the higher the level of psychological abuse in dating experienced, the lower the self-esteem felt by young adult women.
