Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning and boundaries of the Prophet Muhammad's long hair from the perspective of hadith and to explore the living hadith phenomenon among long-haired students at the Faculty of Usuluddin and Islamic Studies (FUSI), UIN North Sumatra. This study employs a qualitative method combining library research through the Ma’ani al-Hadith approach and field research using in-depth interviews and observation. The findings reveal two main points. First, textually, variations in authentic narrations regarding the Prophet's hair length (ranging from ears to shoulders) occurred due to differences in time and circumstances. Scholars categorize growing long hair as Sunnah Ghairu Tasyri’iyyah (Arab cultural tradition) which is permissible (mubah), whereas its Sunnah Tasyri’iyyah aspect lies in the obligation to maintain and care for the hair. Second, within the realm of living hadith, the perception among long-haired students is not based on rigid doctrines, but on a dialectic between self-expression and emotional attachment to the Prophet. This awareness is actualized through a commitment to maintaining physical neatness during lectures, which successfully dispels negative social stigmas in the academic environment. This study emphasizes that the social acceptance of long hair in Islamic universities is strongly determined by aligning ethics, local custom (‘urf), and personal tidiness.
