Abstract

Steel bars are important engineering materials for structural application. In Nigeria, due to incessant building collapse occurrences, it is important to further investigate Reliability characterization and service life prediction of Reinforcement Steel Bars. Tensile Experiments were conducted on Five Nominal diameters of reinforcing steel bars (10, 12, 16, 20 and 25mm) which were labelled as A, B, C, D, E and F using a Universal Motion Incorporated Tensile Testing Machine, MUTC 100 with capacity of 1000 KN in Mechanical Engineering Workshop of University of Nigeria, Nsukka. After which some Statistical parameters (like Coefficient of Variation (COV), Standard deviation, Skewness and Kurtosis), Weibull Distribution, and Lognormal Distribution were used in the analysis. The Tensile Strength of the samples were symmetrical and moderately skewed except sample B12, C12, A20 and F25 that were highly skewed with the following values 2.424, 2.578, -1.152 and -3.233 respectively. The Kurtosis shows that B12, C12 and F25 with values of 7.695, 7.603 and 10.602 respectively indicates high risk in terms of graphs being peaked or flat. Sample B10 are clearly the strongest with Weibull and Lognormal scale parameters of 794.147 and 792.262 respectively. The largest absolute difference or discrepancies were in sample B12 and C12 with the following values: 9.785 and 13.33 respectively.
