Abstract

The implementation of fardu kifayah in funeral management constitutes a collective obligation for Muslims, requiring both fiqh knowledge and practical competence, particularly for women in handling the funeral rites of deceased women. However, previous community service programs were still limited in sustainably strengthening women's practical skills. In Paku Alam Village, women’s capabilities in washing and shrouding the deceased remain dependent on specific individuals. This community service program aimed to improve women’s fiqh literacy and practical skills in conducting funeral rites in accordance with Islamic teachings. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, consisting of needs assessment, practice-based training, simulations, mentoring, and evaluation. The participants were 20 women comprising members of majelis taklim and PKK cadres. The novelty of this program lies in the integration of practical fiqh training, direct simulations, and the establishment of a village women's volunteer team to ensure program sustainability. The findings revealed a significant improvement in participants’ understanding and practical abilities, indicated by 85% of the participants being able to independently perform the simulation of washing and shrouding the deceased. Furthermore, a women’s volunteer team was established, ready to assist in fulfilling fardu kifayah obligations within the community. This program contributes to strengthening the community’s religious capacity and fostering social self-reliance in managing the funeral rites of women.
