Abstract

Waste management in Benowo Hamlet, Ngringo Village, Karanganyar Regency, is characterized by low community awareness and habits of separating organic and inorganic waste. This condition has resulted in suboptimal waste management and may negatively affect environmental quality. This article aims to describe the implementation of the BAGORA Program (Waste Bank, Maggot Cultivation, and Recycled Bookshelf) as a community empowerment effort for environmentally based waste management. The program was implemented for one month through four stages: planning, socialization, implementation, and evaluation. Activities included waste sorting, waste bank management, Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot cultivation for organic waste processing, and the utilization of plastic bottles to produce recycled bookshelves. The results showed improvements in community knowledge, behavior, and participation. The proportion of residents sorting waste increased from 5% to 80%, while understanding of organic waste utilization through maggot cultivation increased from 20% to 85%. Community participation also increased from 10% to 75%. In addition, 10 kg of organic waste per week was diverted to maggot bioconversion, while 56 plastic bottles were reused to produce recycled bookshelves. The BAGORA Program demonstrates that integrating waste management activities with community empowerment can encourage behavioral change and serve as an initial step toward more independent and sustainable environmental management.
