Abstract

Eye diseases remain an important community health problem because their occurrence may be influenced by demographic characteristics and public knowledge of eye health. This study examined the relationships between eye health knowledge, age, gender, educational level, and eye disease occurrence in the Batang III Community Health Center area. A case-control design was used with 76 respondents, comprising 38 cases with eye disease and 38 controls without eye disease. Data were collected through questionnaires and medical records and analyzed using the Chi-square test. Age was significantly associated with eye disease occurrence (p=0.026), as were gender (p=0.044), educational level (p=0.006), and eye health knowledge (p=0.009). Conjunctivitis was the most frequently identified eye disease, while respondents with good knowledge were more commonly found in the control group. Eye disease occurrence in this community was significantly associated with demographic and knowledge-related factors. Strengthening eye health education, early detection, and preventive services through primary healthcare may help improve community awareness and support timely use of eye care services, especially among locally identified groups with moderate knowledge and differing educational backgrounds.
