Abstract

Public Street Lighting (PJU) is vital infrastructure for ensuring the safety and comfort of road users at night. This study aims to analyze and compare the performance of public street lighting systems using 90 W Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology on Jalan Udayana and High-Pressure Sodium (SON-T) lamps on Jalan Puring, Mataram City. The evaluation was conducted based on lighting quality parameters (light intensity/lux), active power consumption, and power factor (cos φ).Light intensity measurements were taken using a lux meter at sample points along the road sections, while electrical parameters were measured at the street lighting control panels. The results indicate that the use of 90 W LED lamps on Jalan Udayana (70 units) produced a stable and uniform light intensity distribution ranging from 20 to 70 lux, with a total measured active power of 11.26 kW and a favorable power factor (cos φ) of 0.90. Conversely, the use of SON-T lamps on Jalan Puring (7 units) resulted in highly fluctuating and uneven lighting levels ranging from 3 to 70 lux, with a measured active power of 420.96 Watts and a low power factor of 0.50, attributed to the use of ballasts.Based on the analysis, the LED-based street lighting system proved to be far more efficient, offered superior light distribution quality, and met road lighting standards. Therefore, converting conventional SON-T lamps to LED lamps is recommended as a measure to optimize the street lighting system in Mataram City.
