Abstract

Flooding issues in Makassar City remain a major concern that requires government attention. The Makassar City area, particularly during the rainy season with high rainfall, often coincides with the occurrence of the highest tidal surge in the Makassar Strait, which blocks the flow of the Tallo River at its mouth. The current river cross-section is unable to accommodate the discharge coming from the upstream, causing overflow that inundates residential areas and agricultural land. This study aims to determine the storage capacity and evaluate the effectiveness of the Nipa-Nipa regulation pond in flood management in Makassar City. A quantitative research method with a descriptive approach was used, presenting field survey data systematically and factually while establishing the relationship between the objects being studied through descriptive narration. The results of the study indicate that the storage capacity of the Nipa-Nipa regulation pond is 0.051231 m³/second. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the Nipa-Nipa regulation pond in handling flood discharge is measured at the peak discharge of Q2 years, which is 491.31 m³/second, with a time interval of 130 minutes. At the peak discharge of Q100 years, the value reached 1,131.94 m³/second, with a time interval of 56 minutes. Based on these analyses, the effectiveness of the Nipa-Nipa regulation pond’s capacity decreases at specific return periods, influenced by factors such as rainfall intensity.
