Abstract

This study investigates how mathematical problem-solving ability can be strengthened through the implementation of Problem Based Learning (PBL). The research was carried out using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, which proceeded through the formulation of research questions, a literature search conducted via Google Scholar, application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, article selection, data analysis, and synthesis of results. Thirteen studies deemed relevant were then examined in depth based on their reported outcomes. The study confirms that PBL consistently drives positive advancements in mathematical problem-solving skills for both school and tertiary-level students. Its effectiveness is evident from increased pretest-posttest scores, significant differences between experimental and control groups, high N-Gain achievements, improved learning mastery, and substantial effect sizes. PBL's positive impact was consistently found across various educational levels and categories of students' initial mathematical ability. Moreover, PBL remained effective when combined with other instructional approaches, including differentiated instruction and local cultural contexts. In conclusion, these insights substantiate that Problem-Based Learning serves as a potent and versatile instructional framework for cultivating mathematical problem-solving proficiencies across various educational echelons.
