Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders, including back pain, can interfere with daily activities and quality of life, particularly among older adults and individuals with degenerative conditions. Community-based health education combined with practical exercise may support the prevention of musculoskeletal problems and strengthen community capacity for maintaining physical function. This community engagement activity aimed to improve the knowledge and practical understanding of health cadres regarding back pain risk prevention through posture training and muscle strengthening exercises. The activity was conducted in Wonocolo District, Surabaya, involving 50 health cadres. The implementation consisted of preparation and coordination, pre-test, health education, interactive discussion, demonstration and direct practice of simple posture and muscle-strengthening exercises, followed by a post-test. Knowledge was assessed using a 10-item multiple-choice questionnaire covering posture, safe lifting techniques, stretching, physical activity, muscle strengthening, smartphone posture, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. The results showed that the participants had a high level of knowledge before the intervention, with the mean pre-test score of 95.00. Following the education and practical session, the mean post-test score increased to 96.36, representing an increase of 1.36 points. The relatively small increase was interpreted as reinforcement of existing knowledge because the participants' baseline knowledge was already high. The activity provided additional understanding of appropriate posture, physical activity, and simple exercises that can be performed independently. This community-based educational approach supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through promotive and preventive efforts to strengthen community capacity in maintaining musculoskeletal health.
