Abstract

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a pathogenic bacterium responsible for diseases in shrimp, causing substantial losses in aquaculture. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as potential alternative antibacterial agents due to their ability to inhibit bacterial growth. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of AgNPs against V. parahaemolyticus. An experimental approach was conducted using four AgNP concentrations (12.5, 25, 50, and 100 ppm), chloramphenicol as a positive control, and sterile seawater as a negative control. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and agar well diffusion assays. The reported MIC and MBC values were 12.5 and 100 ppm, respectively, yielding an MBC/MIC ratio of 8. Inhibition zone diameters increased with AgNP concentration, ranging from 1.17 ± 0.42 mm at 12.5 ppm to 9.82 ± 0.67 mm at 100 ppm. The positive control produced an inhibition zone of 21.28 ± 0.29 mm, whereas the negative control showed no inhibition. A strong concentration–response relationship was observed (R² = 0.9446). These findings indicate concentration-dependent antibacterial activity of AgNPs against V. parahaemolyticus, supporting further investigation of their efficacy and safety for aquaculture applications.
