Abstract

This study aims to describe the narrative structure of Putri Mandalika in oral storytelling and performing arts and to examine their similarities and differences. Putri Mandalika is a folk narrative that has developed within Sasak culture in Lombok and has also been adapted into the theatrical performance Teater Balada Putri Mandalika. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Primary data were obtained through interviews with traditional figures in Pujut Village and the head of Kuta Village, as well as documentation of the Teater Balada Putri Mandalika performance by Sanggar Kampoeng Pelangi. Secondary data consisted of a folklore book and related written sources. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, while analysis focused on theme, setting, characters and characterization, plot, point of view, and message. The findings show that the oral narrative moves from the introduction of the kingdom and Putri Mandalika, to a conflict involving the choice of a husband that could cause disputes, and finally to the resolution through her sacrifice by jumping into the sea and becoming Nyale. In Teater Balada Putri Mandalika, the structure is adapted through the conflict involving Hulubalang, Imin, and Isuh, the arrival of the princes, the ensuing dispute, and Putri Mandalika’s decision to jump from the cliff. Both forms retain the central character, the conflict over marriage, sacrifice, and messages of unity, but differ in scenes, modes of communication, and the use of performance space.
