Abstract

This study develops an integrated conceptual framework to explain the determinants and organizational consequences of Key Audit Matter (KAM) disclosures under International Standard on Auditing (ISA) 701. Using a conceptual approach, the study synthesizes relevant theoretical and empirical literature to propose a framework that integrates auditor, client, corporate governance, and institutional factors as determinants of KAM disclosure. The framework further identifies governance mechanisms and KAM disclosure quality as intervening variables influencing organizational outcomes. The review suggests that high-quality KAM disclosures enhance audit quality, financial reporting quality, transparency, and stakeholder confidence, leading to improved firm value, investment efficiency, liquidity, organizational reputation, and lower cost of capital. The study also highlights key research gaps, including the need to distinguish the effects of KAM determinants from their consequences, the growing emphasis on disclosure quality rather than quantity, and the limited evidence from developing economies. The proposed framework extends the auditing literature by providing a comprehensive foundation for future empirical research and offers practical insights for auditors, regulators, audit committees, and standard setters seeking to improve the quality and effectiveness of KAM disclosures.
