Abstract

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix that may require surgery and carries a risk of surgical site infection during the postoperative period. Infection management is maintain the cleanliness of the surgical wound. This study aimed to describe the implementation of infection management for a postoperative appendicitis patient at Dr. Tadjuddin Chalid General Hospital, Makassar. A case study method was employed, utilizing a nursing care approach for a single patient Mr. M who was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and underwent a laparotomy. Assessments were conducted during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative stages, focusing on nursing issues that arose throughout the perioperative process. In the postoperative stage, a risk for infection was identified associated with the effects of the invasive procedure manifested by redness, swelling, and discharge at the surgical wound site. Interventions included wound care, the application of aseptic techniques, hand hygiene before and after patient contact, the use of personal protective equipment, environmental hygiene maintenance, and patient and family education regarding signs and symptoms of infection and surgical wound care. The results indicated that following the implementation of infection management, the patient and their family understood infection prevention measures and were able to maintain the cleanliness of the surgical wound site. It is concluded that infection management through the application of aseptic techniques, hand hygiene, wound care, and patient and family education can support infection prevention in postoperative appendicitis patients.
