Abstract

Hypertension is a health issue requiring both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management to prevent cardiovascular complications. One complementary therapy option is a decoction of celery leaves (Apium graveolens), which contains apiin, apigenin, flavonoids, and potassium compounds with the potential to help lower blood pressure. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of administering celery leaf decoction in reducing blood pressure among hypertensive patients in the working area of the Maccini Sawah Community Health Center (Puskesmas). A case report method utilizing a nursing care approach for a single hypertensive patient was employed. Assessment covered the patient's complaints, history of hypertension, vital signs, and blood pressure. The intervention involved administering 250 ml of celery leaf decoction daily, alongside monitoring the patient's condition and blood pressure. Implementation took place on April 8 and 10, 2025. Initial assessment results showed a blood pressure of 180/97 mmHg, with complaints of chest pain and a headache rated at a pain scale of 4. Following the intervention, the patient exhibited a positive response, reporting greater comfort and relaxation as well as a reduction in symptoms. Celery leaf decoction demonstrated a positive effect in helping to lower blood pressure in patients with mild to moderate hypertension. Administering celery leaf decoction can serve as a complementary therapy, provided that the patient's condition and prescribed medical treatments are taken into account.

Abstract

Hypertension is a prevalent non-communicable disease that can lead to various complications if left uncontrolled. Limited knowledge regarding hypertension and blood pressure management can hinder the community's ability to maintain their health. This study aimed to implement health education to improve knowledge and blood pressure control among hypertensive patients in the working area of the Maccini Sawah Community Health Center (Puskesmas). A pre- and post-test approach was employed with five hypertensive respondents. Assessments involved a knowledge questionnaire and blood pressure measurements taken before and after the intervention. Health education was delivered via a door-to-door counseling method using leaflets containing information on hypertension, blood pressure measurement and control, healthy lifestyle practices, and complication prevention. The results indicated that prior to the education, two respondents (40%) possessed good knowledge, while three (60%) had poor knowledge. Following the education, the number of respondents with good knowledge increased to four (80%). Furthermore, measurements showed that the respondents' blood pressure levels were lower after the education compared to before. In conclusion, the implementation of health education through counseling and leaflets can enhance knowledge and assist in blood pressure control among hypertensive patients.
