Abstract

Dissimilar welding of austenitic stainless steel is widely applied in industrial systems such as scrubber discharge pipelines in coal-fired power plants, where materials are exposed to aggressive acidic environments. While several studies have investigated the effect of welding parameters on corrosion behavior, the role of filler rod type in dissimilar TIG welded joints, particularly between AISI 304 and AISI 310S stainless steels, remains insufficiently explored. This study evaluates the effect of different filler rods (ER308LSi, ER309LSi, and ER316LSi) on the corrosion behavior of dissimilar welded joints in a 0.5 M sulfuric acid (H2SO4) environment. Microstructural characterization was performed using metallographic observation, while electrochemical testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM G5 – 13 to determine corrosion behavior. The results show that all specimens exhibit typical active-passive behavior. However, differences in electrochemical stability are observed. ER308LSi demonstrates the most stable passive behavior and the lowest corrosion rate of 0.272 mm/y, while ER316LSi exhibits the highest corrosion rate of 0.907 mm/y, indicating reduced passive film stability in H2SO4 conditions. The microstructural observations support these results by showing differences in weld metal characteristics associated with filler rod composition. These findings highlight that chromium content plays a dominant role in enhancing passive film stability, whereas the presence of molybdenum does not provide additional benefits in sulfuric acid environments. Therefore, ER309LSi is considered the most suitable filler rod for improving the corrosion resistance of dissimilar AISI 304-AISI 310S welded joints in acidic industrial environments.
