Abstract

This study examines the translation shifts and acceptability of slang expressions found in the Indonesian subtitles of selected KSI YouTube videos. The objectives are to identify the types of slang expressions used, to analyze the translation shifts applied in rendering them into Indonesian, and to evaluate the acceptability of the resulting translations. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through content analysis of KSI videos published between November 2025 and March 2026. The data were analyzed using Allan and Burridge's slang classification, Catford's translation shift theory, and Nababan et al.'s translation quality assessment scale, following Spradley's four-stage analysis procedure. A total of 75 slang expressions were identified, dominated by fresh and creative slang (78.67%), followed by flippant (16.00%), acronym (2.67%), and clipping (2.67%) slang. Regarding translation shifts, unit shift was the most frequent (32.00%), followed closely by class shift and structure shift (30.67% each), while level shift (4.00%) and intra-system shift (2.67%) occurred less often. The acceptability assessment showed that most translations (89.33%) were acceptable, 9.33% were less acceptable, and only 1.34% were unacceptable. These findings indicate that the Indonesian subtitles generally succeed in conveying the intended meaning of the source slang expressions while maintaining naturalness, and that grammatical shifts do not necessarily reduce translation quality but instead help produce more natural and communicative subtitles for Indonesian audiences
