Abstract

Background: Sleep quality disturbances in postpartum mothers commonly occur due to hormonal changes, physical fatigue, nighttime breastfeeding activities, and psychological stress during the postpartum period. These conditions may affect the mother’s physical and psychological recovery process. One non-pharmacological complementary therapy that can be used to help improve sleep quality is lavender aromatherapy inhalation. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of lavender aromatherapy inhalation on the sleep quality of postpartum mothers. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental method with a control group design. The sample consisted of 42 postpartum mothers divided into an intervention group and a control group, with 21 respondents in each group selected using a consecutive sampling technique. The intervention group received lavender aromatherapy inhalation using an inhaler for 15 minutes at night before sleep, while the control group received standard postpartum care. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the independent-samples t-test. Result: The mean posttest sleep quality score was 3.86 ± 1.153 in the intervention group and 8.14 ± 2.869 in the control group. The results of the between-group difference test showed a statistically significant difference in posttest sleep quality scores between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). The intervention group had a lower mean sleep quality score than the control group, indicating better sleep quality after receiving lavender aromatherapy inhalation. Conclusion: Lavender aromatherapy inhalation had an effect on improving the sleep quality of postpartum mothers.
