Abstract

Dental caries is one of the most common oral health problems among school-aged children. Lack of knowledge about the importance of filling decayed teeth may lead to delayed treatment and increase the risk of further dental damage. This study aimed to determine the effect of health education using brochure media on students’ knowledge regarding dental fillings for decayed teeth at SMP Negeri 10 Payakumbuh. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group design. The population consisted of 120 students, with a sample of 92 students selected using purposive sampling. The samples were divided into two groups: an intervention group consisting of 46 students who received health education using brochure media and a control group consisting of 46 students who received health education using poster media. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire through pretest and posttest measurements. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that the mean knowledge score in the intervention group increased from 8.96 to 9.72, with an increase of 0.76, while the control group increased from 8.83 to 9.26, with an increase of 0.43. The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.000 in the intervention group and 0.006 in the control group (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that health education using brochure and poster media improved students’ knowledge about dental fillings for decayed teeth. Brochure media showed a greater increase in knowledge and can be used as an alternative medium for dental and oral health education in schools.
