Abstract

Grain filling is an important stage in cereal crop growth that affects final grain quality, size, and yield. This review examines how the process works, including internal and external factors, and farming techniques that can improve it, especially in rice. The research shows that good grain filling depends on a balance between the plant’s ability to produce food and its ability to use that food. This balance is influenced by how well leaves make food through photosynthesis, how well grains store that food, the role of plant hormones, and the activity of enzymes that help make starch. Outside factors like the availability of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, temperature, water, sunlight, and farming methods like how plants are spaced, which varieties are used, and the use of helpful microbes also play a big role in how quickly the grains fill. Farming practices such as using the right amount of nitrogen based on the rice type, adding plant hormones like auxins, arranging plants properly, and using natural fertilizers and beneficial microbes have been found to help the plant move more food to the grains. Improving grain filling not only leads to more and better crops but also helps farmers earn more and supports the country’s ability to feed its people. Understanding these processes and using the right farming practices are key to improving cereal production, a major food source for many.
