Abstract

This study examines how Community Corrections Officers (Pembimbing Kemasyarakatan, PK) apply the Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach in the social rehabilitation of child clients at the Class II Probation and Parole Office (Balai Pemasyarakatan) of Bojonegoro, the obstacles they face, and the contribution of the approach to behavioral change and readiness for social reintegration. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was used. Informants were selected through purposive sampling and consisted of three PK and six child clients. Data were collected from July to August 2026 through semi-structured in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document review, then analyzed with the interactive model of Miles and Huberman and tested through source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings show that MI is practiced implicitly. The PK have not received formal MI training, yet their communication consistently reflects the four MI processes (engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning) and the four principles of empathy, developing discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy. The obstacles include limited session time, the absence of formal training, children who are initially withdrawn, varying family support, and risky peer environments. Child clients reported greater self-awareness, self-control, closer family relationships, and concrete plans for work or education. These findings are interpreted as a contribution rather than a causal effect. A training and session-protocol program named TEMU (Temukan Motivasi untuk Berubah) is proposed to standardize MI practice.
