Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of dietary gelinggang leaf extract on ileal lactic acid bacteria (LAB), presumptive Escherichia coli, and presumptive Salmonella spp. in laying quail. Two hundred six-week-old female Japanese quail were assigned to five treatments with four replicate cages of 10 birds. Treatments comprised basal feed, basal feed with zinc bacitracin as an antibiotic growth promoter (AGP), and basal feed with 0.5%, 1.0%, or 1.5% extract. One bird per cage was sampled after six weeks; the cage was the experimental unit (n = 4 per treatment). Log10 CFU/g data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Duncan’s test, with residual diagnostics and a permutation sensitivity analysis. Treatment effects were detected for LAB (F4,15 = 12.108; P = 0.000135), presumptive E. coli (F4,15 = 64.647; P = 2.821 × 10⁻⁹), and presumptive Salmonella spp. (F4,15 = 26.352; P = 1.243 × 10⁻⁶). Among extract treatments, 0.5% yielded the highest mean LAB count (7.35) and lowest presumptive E. coli (4.00) and Salmonella spp. (2.10). Residual nonnormality warrants caution in pairwise interpretation. The 0.5% inclusion showed a favorable numerical profile; a validated optimum or equivalence to AGP was not established.
