Abstract

Early marriage is a social issue that concerns not only age and legality but also an individual’s readiness to assume responsibility for their spouse and children. This study aims to analyze early marriage from the perspective of Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics of responsibility, particularly through the concepts of the face, the Other, alterity, and responsibility. This research employs a qualitative method using a literature study approach. The sources include Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophical works, scholarly literature on early marriage and family, and documents of the Catholic Church. The findings indicate that early marriage should be understood as an ethical issue because marriage requires the ability to move beyond self-interest and recognize the spouse as the Other, possessing dignity, freedom, and vulnerability. The presence of children further expands the demand for responsibility because children are persons who possess their own dignity and future. Therefore, marital maturity is determined not only by age but also by the ability to respect, care for, protect, and take responsibility for the Other.
