Abstract

This study examines word abbreviation phenomena in Generation Z slang across social media platforms. Using a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in Kridalaksana’s (2007) abbreviation morphology framework, data were collected through netnography, documentation, and library research from TikTok, Instagram, and X (Twitter), involving users aged 16 - 27 years between January 2025 and May 2026. Analysis followed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), with validity ensured through source and theory triangulation. Four abbreviation forms were identified in digital discourse: initialisms (OTW, OVT, YGY, MLYT), acronyms (mager, bucin, FOMO, gamon), clippings (delulu, rizz, ambis), and contractions (gak, kalo, makasih, kek). Results indicate cross-linguistic hybridization, prominently illustrated by the acronym gamon (gagal move on), which blends Indonesian and English elements. Qualitatively, platform trends suggest TikTok users lean toward clippings and audiovisual acronyms, Instagram toward content-based initialisms and hashtags, and X toward dense textual contractions. Sociolinguistically, these abbreviations are interpreted as serving functions of group solidarity, digital communication efficiency, and linguistic creativity. These findings highlight the value of an inclusive morphological literacy approach in Indonesian language education to foster students’ metalinguistic awareness in the digital era.
