Abstract

Oral literature is an intangible cultural heritage that functions to record the collective memory and ecological wisdom of a society. However, the existence of oral literature in the midst of modernization is increasingly threatened, and its utilization in literary education is often neglected due to the dominance of theoretical learning that lacks local context. This study aims to examine the variations of legends in the Ranu Triangle area of Lumajang Regency (Ranu Klakah, Ranu Bedali, and Ranu Pakis), dissect their narrative structure, analyze their socio-cultural functions, and formulate their didactic values and implications for literature learning in schools. This research employs a qualitative design using the sociology of literature approach. The method applied is inferential content analysis, supported by primary data collection through in-depth interviews with indigenous communities, and secondary data in the form of historical and geological literature studies. Source triangulation techniques are used to ensure data validity. The results indicate that, structurally, the legends of the Ranu Triangle are built upon the theme of cosmic harmony and the hybridity of characterizations, which merge Islamic spiritual figures with mythological entities. Based on William R. Bascom's functionalism theory, these legends serve four main functions: as projection system, validation of culture, education tool, and a social control. This research also extracts four main didactic values: religiosity, ecological awareness, moral responsibility-empathy, and social solidarity. In conclusion, the Ranu Triangle legend is a crystallization of history, ecology, and spirituality that functions not merely as entertainment, but contains an essential informal ecological curriculum. The integration of this local wisdom as teaching material for Indonesian Language and Literature is highly recommended to ensure that learning occurs contextually, meaningfully, and is able to strengthen students' environmentally conscious character.
