Abstract

The Karo people are not confined to the Karo region but have also settled across Langkat, including Nambiki Village in Selesai District, where the majority of the population is ethnically Karo. Since the era of the Langkat Sultanate, the Nambiki community has maintained relations with the sultanate, as reflected in the involvement of Karo figures in its government. This study examines how relations between the Karo community of Nambiki and the Langkat Sultanate were established and developed. Employing the historical method, the study draws on documentary research conducted in several libraries and the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia, complemented by interviews with informants knowledgeable about Nambiki's Karo history and culture. The collected data were subsequently verified and interpreted. The findings demonstrate that Nambiki served as an important administrative center under a pengulu, encompassing 44 kesain and maintaining relations with the kejeruan within the Langkat Sultanate's governmental structure. These political relations were accompanied by Karo-Malay cultural adaptation, evident in Malay-inspired ornamentation on stilt houses and in the performing arts of Ronggeng. These findings demonstrate that Nambiki's political integration into the Langkat Sultanate developed alongside cultural adaptation without erasing its Karo socio-cultural identity.
