Abstract

The development of technology in the 21st century has had a significant impact on social and cultural dynamics, including local cultures in North Maluku. Technology functions not only as an instrument of modernization but also as a strategic medium for cultural preservation efforts. This study aims to examine the role of technology in preserving local culture in North Maluku, as well as the contributions of various stakeholders involved in this preservation through digital media. The research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach, focusing on the collection and analysis of data from various written sources. The findings indicate that twenty-first-century technological development has generated not only negative impacts on culture but also substantial contributions to its preservation. Digital platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook are used by the government, cultural activists, academics, and the general public to document, promote, and educate audiences about the richness of local culture. This study concludes that digital technology, despite its risks, serves as a vital instrument for sustaining and revitalizing local cultural identity in North Maluku amid globalization.
