Abstract

Hypertension is a health problem that is the leading cause of death worldwide and occurs across all age groups, particularly among older adults. Older adults are at greater risk of developing hypertension due to the aging process and declining cardiac function. One non-pharmacological therapy that can be used by older adults to lower blood pressure in hypertension is complementary therapy using celery decoction and Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). This study aimed to determine the differences in blood pressure before and after the intervention combining celery decoction and Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) therapy. The method used was a case report with the application of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in the community. The sample consisted of 3 clients who received the intervention for 7 days. Blood pressure was measured daily before and after the intervention. The results showed a decrease in blood pressure among the 3 clients, with an average daily reduction of 4.71 mmHg in systolic blood pressure and 4.52 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure. The average reduction in blood pressure after 7 days of intervention was 20 mmHg for systolic blood pressure and 16.23 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure. Following the 7-day intervention, clients also experienced reduced complaints, including dizziness, tightness or pain in the neck and joints, and tingling in the fingers and toes. The conclusion indicates that the combination of celery decoction and PMR therapy can help reduce blood pressure in older adults with hypertension.
