Multimodal transportation plays an important role in supporting the smooth distribution of goods through the integration of various modes of transportation from origin to destination. In this system, the efficiency of container handling is one of the factors determining the smooth flow of goods and the quality of logistics services. This study aims to analyze the role of container handling efficiency in supporting the smooth operation of multimodal transportation at PT. Prima Indonesia Logistik Belawan. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using field research and library research methods. Field data were collected through observations of container handling processes and interviews with parties involved in the company's operational activities, particularly the operations manager. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively to identify activity stages, operational constraints, and factors affecting container handling efficiency. The results show that the container handling process at PT. Prima Indonesia Logistik Belawan still faces several challenges that affect operational efficiency. These challenges include delivery and recording processes that are still carried out manually, potentially resulting in input errors; limitations and damage to loading and unloading equipment; suboptimal container arrangement; and limited workforce availability in the cleaning process. These conditions may prolong service time and hinder container movement within the multimodal transportation chain. Therefore, efficiency improvements need to be achieved through equipment optimization, more systematic container arrangement, enhancement of workforce competence and availability, and the utilization of information systems to improve the accuracy and speed of operational processes.
