Abstract

Plasmapheresis therapy is one of the treatment modalities for Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). However, this therapy poses significant challenges, particularly in Indonesia, due to its high cost and complex procedures. Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of GBS patients, assess the indications, effectiveness, safety, and therapeutic responses of plasmapheresis among its variants. Methods: This systematic review was conducted by searching several databases for articles published between January 2020 and May 2025. Based on the established eligibility criteria, 10 articles were included for this review. Results: The majority of GBS patients were male, with a wide age range from 2 to 70 years old, and various GBS types. Most studies have indicated that plasmapheresis therapy significantly improved clinical outcomes in GBS patients, and that it was more effective when administered within 7–10 days of symptom onset. Plasmapheresis was also reported as a relatively safe therapy with tolerable side effects. However, GBS variants and the patient’s initial condition may influence the response to plasmapheresis therapy. Conclusion: Plasmapheresis therapy has been proven to provide meaningful clinical benefits for most GBS patients.
