Abstract

his study analyzes the representation of identity formation and self-image in the characters Alaska Tahta Wardana and Alana Juwanda in the novel Alaska by Nisaafatm. This descriptive qualitative study adopts a literary psychology approach, drawing on Erikson’s concept of identity, Marcia’s concepts of exploration and commitment, and Hall’s concept of emotional turmoil. Narrative passages and dialogues were selected through a close reading of the entire novel and analyzed comparatively. The findings reveal that Alaska maintains a cold and dominant social image while displaying emotional openness in certain relationships. Alana explores her understanding of herself through interpersonal relationships amid family conflict. Toward the end of the story, both characters show indications of changes in their relational orientations and a strengthening of commitment. These findings constitute an interpretation of the characters’ representation in the text and do not establish that their identity crises have been definitively resolved. This study demonstrates the value of a comparative reading of identity, self-image, and emotional turmoil in popular young adult fiction.
