Abstract

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems experienced by university students. Excessive social media use and poor sleep quality are considered behavioral factors that may be related to anxiety, particularly among medical students. This study aimed to analyze the association of social media use and sleep quality with anxiety among medical students. This was an analytical quantitative study with a cross-sectional design involving 624 medical students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) to assess social media use, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality, and the anxiety subscale of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) to measure anxiety. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results showed that social media use and sleep quality were simultaneously associated with anxiety, F(2,621) = 3.118, p = 0.045, with an R² value of 0.010. Partially, social media use showed a positive and significant association with anxiety (B = 0.026; β = 0.092; p = 0.023), while sleep quality was not significantly associated with anxiety (B = 0.046; β = 0.029; p = 0.464). This study concludes that social media use is significantly associated with anxiety among medical students, whereas sleep quality does not show an independent association in the regression model.
