Abstract

This study aimed to describe the implementation of the kentongan extracurricular activity and analyze its role in character development among students at SD Negeri 2 Karangtalun Kidul, Banyumas Regency. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, involving the principal, kentongan extracurricular instructor, and students as research subjects. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data validity was established through source and technique triangulation. The findings showed that the kentongan extracurricular activity was implemented through structured and continuous planning, implementation, and evaluation stages. The activity contributed to developing students’ discipline through adherence to training schedules and rules, responsibility through maintaining musical instruments and fulfilling assigned roles, cooperation through group interaction and coordination, and self-confidence through opportunities to perform at various school and community events. Character development was supported by adequate facilities, school and instructor support, and high student enthusiasm. The identified challenges included differences in students’ characteristics and abilities, mood conditions affecting training motivation, and difficulties memorizing rhythmic patterns and songs. Thus, kentongan extracurricular activities can effectively foster positive student character while supporting the preservation of local culture.
