Abstract

Diplomatic speeches delivered by heads of state serve as strategic spaces for countries to represent their identity, moral position, and role within the international order. The significance of such speeches lies not merely in the themes presented, but also in how various discourse elements are organized to construct the representation of a state as a global actor. This study aims to analyze the construction of Indonesia’s representation in President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model. The data consist of the speech text entitled Indonesia’s Call for Hope, delivered on September 23, 2025. The analysis examines macrostructure, superstructure, microstructure, social cognition, and social context through coding and the synthesis of relationships among categories. The findings identify four main constructions: humanity and justice as normative frameworks, historical experience as a source of moral legitimacy, multilateralism as a space for diplomatic agency, and domestic capacity as a basis for global contribution. Solidarity with Palestine serves as a point of articulation connecting these four constructions. Indonesia’s representation is constructed through the interconnection of values, historical experience, diplomatic actions, and national capacity, positioning Indonesia as a state actor with a moral position, diplomatic agency, and capacity to contribute to global issues. These findings refer to national self-representation constructed through discourse rather than to the perceptions or acceptance of the international community.
