Abstract

Migrating away from home has become a common phenomenon driven by the pursuit of a better future, particularly better educational opportunities, as is the case for students from Papua. Emotion regulation and academic resilience serve as important psychological mechanisms that help them adapt. Adjustment is a mental and behavioral process in which individuals attempt to cope with internal and external pressures in order to achieve balance with their environment, whereas emotion regulation refers to the ability to manage, recognize, and express emotions adaptively. This study aimed to identify the effects of emotion regulation and academic resilience on the adjustment of Papuan students. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, using data collected through an online questionnaire completed by 100 Papuan migrant students studying in West Jakarta who met the participant criteria. The results indicated a significant relationship among emotion regulation, academic resilience, and adjustment. Emotion regulation showed a significant negative relationship with adjustment, whereas academic resilience showed a very strong positive relationship. Multiple regression analysis revealed that both variables simultaneously contributed to adjustment, with academic resilience as the most dominant predictor. No differences in resilience were found based on gender. It can therefore be concluded that, among Papuan migrant students, adjustment is determined more by personal characteristics such as resilience, stress management, and environmental support.
