Abstract

Background: Low back pain is one of the most common complaints experienced by women during the third trimester of pregnancy due to physiological changes, increased body weight, and postural changes. This condition may cause discomfort, interfere with daily activities, and reduce the quality of life of pregnant women. One of the non-pharmacological therapies that can be used to relieve low back pain is a red ginger compress. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of red ginger compresses in reducing low back pain among third-trimester pregnant women at Madinah Clinic, Pujon. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 30 respondents selected using a quota sampling technique. The intervention involved applying a red ginger compress for 20 minutes twice daily, in the morning and afternoon. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: Before the intervention, most respondents experienced moderate pain (18 respondents; 60.0%). After receiving the red ginger compress intervention, most respondents experienced mild pain (20 respondents; 66.7%). The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a Z value of -4.462 with p < 0.001, indicating a statistically significant difference in pain intensity before and after the intervention. Conclusion: The use of red ginger compresses was associated with a reduction in low back pain intensity among third-trimester pregnant women. Therefore, red ginger compresses may be considered a complementary non-pharmacological therapy to help alleviate low back pain during pregnancy.
