Abstract

Individuals with intellectual disabilities generally face barriers in accessing knowledge related to sexual and reproductive health. Adequate sexuality knowledge can help prevent and protect children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities from sexual violence. This study aimed to identify and synthesize the current scientific evidence on reproductive health education for adolescent girls with intellectual disabilities. The review included articles discussing reproductive health education for adolescent girls with intellectual disabilities, focusing on the forms, methods, and educational media used, and published within the last five years. This study employed a scoping review methodology based on the Arksey and O’Malley framework and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidance, with reporting guided by the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Cochrane, and Wiley, yielding 6 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that of the 357 articles identified, six were considered relevant based on country context, methodological approach, and article quality. Findings from the six reviewed articles indicate that parents, teachers, educators, counselors, and caregivers still demonstrate limited readiness and understanding in providing sexual and reproductive health education to adolescents with intellectual disabilities.
