Abstract

Wayang Timplong is one of the traditional arts unique to Nganjuk Regency, possessing significant historical, educational, social, and cultural values. This art form was created in 1910 and has become an integral part of the cultural identity of the people of Nganjuk, passed down from generation to generation. However, changing patterns of public entertainment have increasingly threatened the existence of Wayang Timplong. The declining number of performances, the low interest among younger generations, and the limited number of active artists have become serious challenges to the preservation of this traditional art. Therefore, sustainable community empowerment efforts are needed to ensure the continued existence and preservation of Wayang Timplong. The background of this research is based on the declining existence of Wayang Timplong due to modernization, the decreasing number of artists, and the low interest among younger generations. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews and observation. The informants consist of the Department of Tourism and Culture of Nganjuk Regency, artists, and the community of Kepanjen Village. Data analysis uses the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that community empowerment in preserving Wayang Timplong is carried out through three main aspects: protection, maintenance, and cultural transmission. The government acts as a facilitator through artist development, the submission of cultural heritage status, and organizing performances. Artists play a role as agents of cultural transmission, while the community participates in maintaining the sustainability of traditions through socio-cultural activities. However, several challenges remain, such as the lack of artist regeneration and the influence of modern culture. Therefore, collaboration between the government, artists, and the community is necessary to ensure the sustainability of Wayang Timplong as a local cultural identity.
